Trichy: After a long delay, Trichy corporation has begun construction work for a new bridge across the Uyyakondan canal connecting Raja Colony in Cantonment with PWD aqueduct road leading to the Kuzhumayee Amman temple. The new road is expected to decongest a portion of narrow Vayalur Road.
Officials said work for pile foundations has begun on both banks of the canal passing behind the district collectorate. The bridge will be 18m long and 4m wide, spacious enough to handle cars.
The bridge will provide a new link by helping residents cross the canal from Raja Colony near the District Industries Centre (DIC) to the rear side of Bharathi Nagar residential area on Vayalur Road. The bridge will connect multiple private schools and colleges, preventing a section of private vehicles from further congesting the MGMGH in Puthur.
“One car can use the bridge at a time. Foundation work will be completed in two months. We must take into account the release of Cauvery water from the Mettur dam. Water will flow through the canal. We can complete the bridge before Dec,” a corporation official said.
The local body has sanctioned ₹1.1 crore for the bridge. Work for another minor bridge sanctioned alongside, to bypass the canal, between the district court’s walking track and Thennur Anna Nagar is yet to take off. Both bridges will not have any pillars to ensure the water flow remains undisturbed.
